All Artwork Requires Alt Text
Alt-text is used to describe visual images to visitors who may be visually impaired, or anyone who, for any reason, may be using a screen-reader (text-to-voice) web browser.
Alt-text does not have to be elaborate, or written with perfect grammar. If you're new to writing alt-text, it may feel intimidating, but it shouldn't be. The easiest way to think about it is to imagine if someone with vision-impairment asked you to describe your artwork. At the very least, use plain language to describe to describe your art, including the following: medium, colors, and content. Additionally, it will be appreciated if you say something about the style, or mood of your art (abstract, gloomy, hyper-realistic, hopeful, chaotic, serene, etc.)
If your artwork is elaborate, such a a photomontage with many different elements, it is not necessary to describe everything, just the elements that you feel are most important.
When I first started writing alt-text for my art, I struggled with uncertainty. But now that I've been doing it regularly, it has become second-nature. Be conversational, be friendly, be playful.
